IS DIGITAL SCHOOLING EFFECTIVE?

With the pandemic era and education on the line, many countries took to digital schooling or what we know as online schooling to educate the youth. It looked like it was a good option for a short period but little did we know that the lockdown would cross half a year.
After a couple of months of digital schooling, parents as well as students lean more towards the downside of digital schooling when asked about the affects of digital schooling and whether it was something we should consider for a long-term even after the pandemic. This time the complaints were not from students alone but also from parents. It is not always that we see parents and students on the same page. Some of the points that come to light were regarding:
1.Health:
a. Poor Posture:
Since students sit for long hours in front of their systems crouched resulting in back aches, and necks. When in school, they have the recess hour as well as physical education when they can stretch their body and exercise to relive their muscles and stretch their bones. During online classes, the teacher is unable to monitor the posture of the students.
Physical therapists and pediatrics have notices an increasing number of patients ever since we started getting into the online learning systems. Because the student's attention is on what the teacher is teaching, there is less awareness on what they are doing when it comes to body posture. This awareness needs to be brought back to reduce the risk of being used to having a bad posture. The use of a table and chair to do homework should not be ignored. The system's screen should be at eye level to avoid a bent back. Remember a straight back conveys confidence in your personality.
b.Poor Eyesight:
Digital schooling affects students eyesight due to long screen hours. The increasing rate of children wearing spectacles have been of great concern. In school, students look at the black board/ white at a safe distance not requiring them to strain their eyes whereas in digital schooling, the system brightness require students to strain their eyes against the beam of light ending up in causing short-sightedness of vision. Large number of students have complained of headaches at such a young age. In this era, its not only schooling, but immediately after classes, your kids will carry on their day by watching TV or playing on the cellphone because they know that they cannot go out and play. Children are exposed to the screen for almost the entire day. One way to reduce having poor eyesight is by looking at a far off distance for about 15-20 seconds to rest your eyes from getting strained and to stop it from drying.
2.Social Development:
With online schooling, teachers are unable to focus on the social development of the pupil because there is a screen between the two, less understanding and no exchange of feelings. In a school like environment, a student learns to socialize with his/her schoolmates and learns camaraderie, politeness and also learns to take the initiative to participate in answering questions. Digital schooling does not provide the same kind of confidence needed to showcase talent or improving public speaking skills. There is a curiosity that builds in a student when surrounded with a group of students of the same age. A student should have the confidence to be able to question and clear doubts if any. During an online session, each student is given a particular time frame to ask their doubt and get it clarified within that time frame whether they like it or not.
3. Students with Special Needs:
It is difficult for teachers to give students with special needs and care their special attention. The kind of care and understanding cannot be conveyed to the student for care and affection through a screen. The teacher cannot judge the students' development. A face to face physical conversation between the teacher and student is required for those who need special care and attention.
4.Technical and Financial Availability:
A large number of teachers and students also struggle with connectivity during distant learning especially those living in rural areas and areas prone to natural disasters like floods and landslides.
With the increasing rate of unemployment, many families in urban as well as rural find it difficult to provide their children with devices to attend these virtual classes more so if they have multiple children studying. Parents are struggling to keep up with online classes because they need to pay their internet bills on time for proper connectivity, electricity bill, and school fees and books and stationary. Some school require parents to pay the full school fees instead of half even though they aren't using the school premise, school electricity or school ground. Some students are asked to attend their online class wearing the school uniform.
Taking all the points into consideration, I would like to end the blog by stating that online classes or should I say digital schooling is definitely an option to consider for a short term but not effective for long-term for our youth.
