Homemade Scrubs

DIY SCRUBS:

To achieve smooth skin, exfoliation plays a big role in your skincare regime but it's hard to find a really good exfoliator. It's funny how we always tend to assume that the pricier, the better right? To be honest, you can save those bucks and make your own exfoliator.

To make your own exfoliator for your face you will need:

  • 2 tbsp of exfoliant
  • 2 tbsp of liquid or oil (depending on your skin and what you feel comfortable using)
  • 1 tsp of "the ingredient" that is more suitable to enhance your skin depending on its type

These homemade scrubs are not meant only for the ladies but also for the gentlemen out there who want to look presentable.
What's great is that you can store these exfoliants in an airtight jar/empty cream container or in a bowl wrapped with cling film in your refrigerator making it a product of multiple use.

Your exfoliant can be:

  • Ground Almonds (more effective and suitable for aging skin that is roughly age 30 and above)-contains vitamins A and E,  works best if ground fine.
  • Oatmeal- Helps unclog pores because of its rough texture. If your skin type is sensitive, it is advisable to grind the oatmeal first.
  • Ground Rice- Helps in evening out skin texture or discoloration, gives the skin a natural healthy glow.
  • Cinnamon- has anti bacterial properties, works best for acne prone skin.
  • Sugar (white/brown)- great exfoliant as it gets rid of all the dead skin cells making the top most layer looking healthy and glowing, this exfoliant is for any skin type as it melts and gives moisture to your skin during the exfoliation process.
  • Coffee- contains great anti oxidants that reduces presence of cellulites, reduces redness on the skin as well as discoloration resulting in an even colored skin.

Dry Skin Type:

Coconut oil+Ground Almond+Avocado

Coconut oil acts as a moisturizer for your skin considering that it is dry in the first place. Organic coconut oil always works best for the skin.
Ground almonds has all the great properties as mentioned above.
Avocado is an optional addition to your scrub. It helps in reducing fine lines making this scrub suitable for mature skin. It contains natural fats and oils that will help nourish your skin. Avocado will help you achieve a smooth skin making it look less dry.

Oily Skin Type:

Egg white+baking soda+Turmeric

Egg whites help to tighten your skin and also acts as a toner for your skin.
Baking Soda helps to regulate the oil production in your skin making your skin look balanced and less oily. It also helps in maintaining the pH level of your skin.
Turmeric is well known as an anti-inflammatory ingredient. It helps in reducing scars and acne marks present in your face. This ingredient helps to unclog your pores and calms your skin.

Mature Skin:

Yogurt+Ground Rice+Parsley

Yogurt helps to brighten your skin and protects it from the harmful UV rays. It has increased elasticity, fights pores and helps tone the skin.
Parsley is an additional ingredient which is rich in vitamin A and C. It clears acne and acts as a cleanser. If you have dark under eye circles, parsley can help you treat it as it is full of anti oxidants.

Personal Favorites:

My personal favorite exfoliators are of 2 ingredients only:

Tomato+Granulated Sugar

Tomato is an ingredient that is filled with vitamin C and is acidic in nature. It helps transform a dull skin by giving it a natural glow. It is filled with anti-oxidants that help treat ageing skin and skin with sun damage giving the skin an even color.
It is a great ingredient which is versatile to almost all skin type as it helps in shrinking pores, tightens the skin, provides a glow and reduces the formation of oil on the face and acts as a toner giving you the best of everything.
The granulated sugar acts as an exfoliator for your face. You can skip the granulated sugar if you have already exfoliated your face and use the tomato alone as your cleanser.
The unique shape of the sugar makes it a great exfoliator. Rub the sugar on you face with the tomato gently in a circular motion. What's great is that the sugar melts on your skin making your skin feel smooth and soft creating less mess.

Honey+Cinnamon powder/Coffee powder

Honey is a great ingredient to fight the bacteria that is on your skin and helps keep the skin moisturized. It reduces dullness on the skin and gives the skin a glow.
Cinnamon powder/Coffee powder acts as the scrub or exfoliator. The fine granules are rich in anti-oxidants that fights acne and dull skin.
Mix honey and the preferred exfoliator into a paste and apply on the skin for about 8-10 mins. Once partially dry, gently rub your skin in a circular motion. This can be done with wet hands to dilute the sticky honey and to prevent from scratching your skin.
Wash your face with warm/room temperature water and pat dry.

*disclaimer:  Do a patch test of the selected scrubs mentioned above to make sure your skin is not allergic to any of the ingredients and also to make sure your skin is not getting irritated to a particular ingredient before applying the whole scrub to your face.

*Tip: Avoid sun exposure to your skin to attain the best results. As much as possible, try not to expose your skin to the harmful sun rays the day you exfoliate as you have just gotten rid of the dead skin cells.
